Commission for Bel.
August 3, 2013

Something a little different. A reclaimed tapestry made into a giant bag for sewing , knitting and stitching things.
This commission from a fellow ‘textillite’ was very open-ended . Make a bag for all the sewing and knitting things for friend who loves harrysdesk and pink.
After getting permission I tried something that has been floating about in my mind for a while.
Many of the bags of bits and pieces from the op shop have the pieces from tapestries that have been forgotten about….some not even started.
This vintage style tapestry of Pierrot (Clown) and Horse was in perfect condition. It is most likely from the 80’s (some of you might remember) when pierrot had a bit of a resurgence. I am hoping the receiver has fond memories of the eighties!

….I even stitiched the pink colour panel. Yes, I know they are not meant to be stitched, but I wanted to draw attention to the parts of the tapestry not normally seen, once framed.

The flipside of the bag is made from reclaimed cream damask and the lining from a soft minty cashmere scarf. This pocket sits between the shell and the lining.

Inside the bag are a number of smaller bags and purses for all the other bits and pieces used for sewing and knitting.
Everything but the strapping of the handle was recliamed!

Easter Hat Inspiration
March 25, 2013
Lots of Easter Hat Parades coming up this week.
Here’s some inspiration…..
…. this year I thought, the wackier the better.
Can’t see anything you like?
Maybe there will be something on my pinterest board for you.
Scallyoop Scoop!
November 26, 2012
Today I want to tell you all about a fantastic online store.
It’s owned by my fabulous little sister Hayley and a friend… so I am a little bias in my recommendation…. but after I have shown you a small selection of an enormous range of products, I am sure you will agree with me.
Firstly, I will show you some of the items we have enjoyed from Scallyoop and a few reasons why I like them…. and then give you my recommendations for Christmas….. and leave you with a special offer!
Tuxedo Sam (and Friends) USB stick. 14 year old has one and loves it! Once the kids get to high school the USB becomes their best friend. These little guys wont be lost like the boring generic kind…. and are easily recognisable. Even Dad’s and nephew’s would enjoy these.
Djeco make fabulous product. They provide great structured art projects which are vital for building skills. Over the years we have enjoyed many of these craft boxes. They are beautiful indeed.
Covering crafts from colouring, collage, puppet making, folding and knitting these sets ….made for boys as well as girls are highly recommended.
Made by the same company (and often included in the kits) are these felt painting textas and oil pastels. Be warned however….once you buy a child these beautiful textas they will never want normal ones. They make truly beautiful marks and last and last. Well worth the investment.
The oil pastels are also lovely to create art with. you will want to sit alongside your child and draw with them. I think they are better for older children ….. maybe 8+ as they can be a little messy (like oil pastels are)
The Ni Hao Noodle bowl is a fun way to introduce chopsticks to your children. The set comes with a noodle bowl, a patterned plate and a cute set of ‘kid friendly’ chopsticks. The little rubber man holds the chopsticks together making the pinching action that much easier! ….almost like holding a pencil and squeezing. A great gift for 6+ noodle lovers.
We have enjoyed our chalk placement outside and inside. The girls use it to make signs on the cubby house and I sometimes use it to write a list of jobs for them to do…. It’s so much more fun to rub a job off with your hand after doing it!
What is not to love about this sweet Alice in Wonderland necklace (also available as a brooch)? Wood cut and light. Beautiful. You can also get other Alice in Wonderland characters.
The ride on bug.… yes, sadly we are past this, but have many fond memories of the girls zooming around on these. Stylistically so much more beautiful than the plastic ride on…and great for imaginary play.
Past this one too but loved it when the girls were very little. I loved the lightness of the elastic and wood….didn’t hurt when it inevitably hit them in the face! Skish Classic.
I think my all time favourite gift from Scallyoop is Klop. A fantastic park game. It plays like a cross between bowls and boules with a twist or two.
Our family regularly take Klop to the park just with us or with friends and play across generations. The game is well weighted so adult or child can win….. but it’s not all luck. Brilliant!
Now….. my picks for this Christmas and beyond.

Ziggy Platter….. How groovy!
This one is for me! Yes there are gifts for adults too!
Love this idea! …..and Balsam wood Plane Card just $7.95
Another Djeco kit! Un-tricky origami Only $12.50
How about this exquisite wooden puzzle? Lovely.
I have loved these for a while. Such a great idea for the ‘construction kids’. Make-a-do kits.
There you have it!
Some of the best gifts you will find…. and you don’t need to go to the shops! Yay.
The site has soooo many more things to love….. and if you get in quick (before Dec 9) adding the code scallyoop10 will give you $10 off if you spend over $30 and put you into the draw for a $150 scallyoop shopping spree.
Why are you still here?

Pharaoh’s Bib: a DIY photo tutorial
August 18, 2012
It is my habit to only make one costume a year for book week and for all the rest to come from our dress-up box…. or someone else’s.
This keeps the cost and stress down, and helps the kids get creative about which character they want to be.
Last year it was the 11 year old (now 12) who got a special costume made.
I though, just in time for this year I would share a tutorial of how I made the bib.
If you want to create one and don’t sew, you can follow the along, but just use cardboard as the base and instead of stitching the finishes on, use glue. If you do it this way there is no need for lining or binding and would be much less time consuming.
So with no further chatter……..
The Pharaoh Bib Tutorial
What you will need
- Cardboard or paper to make pattern
- base fabric ( I used blue velvet) a rich colour is best
- lining fabric (I used gold satin)
- bias binding (again gold)
- Iron-on stiff interfacing
- Large gold sequins
- Gold wool
- Gold thread
- Gold fabric paint tube
- Contrasting fabric to reverse applique (I used a gold silk)
- pencil, scissors, sewing machine and thread.
How to do it.
The pattern
1. Start with a rectangle approx 42cm x 18cm

2. Using the measurements given create this shape (It is half of the bib…. doing it this way means you get a symmetrical result) Click on the image to enlarge.

3. Folding your base fabric in half and placing the fold on the edge marked “place on the fold” cut the basic shape.
4. Cut another of these pattern pieces in the same way for both your lining and interfacing. You should now have 3 different coloured fabrics (base, lining and interfacing) all the same shape.

5. Back on your pattern piece sketch out an idea of how you will lay on your ‘design’. Egyptian patterns are very repetitive and tend to follow the shape of the item. Start about 1.5cm in from the edge (this is where your bias will be sewn) and create a design that works towards the centre. Make sure you leave some of your background fabric to show through.
6. Put your lining to one side and just work with your base cloth (blue) and your interfacing now.
Iron the interfacing to your base cloth (wrong side of base fabric to shiny side of interfacing) using a dry iron.
7. Transfer your design onto the interfacing.

8. Sew your sequins and stitching on in the design you have chosen. (glue if you like it will be much quicker)

9. Place your other gold fabric behind the area you want to reverse applique ( have it show through) Sew, with a machine, the shape you have designed from the right side of your bib. Do this to both sides of your bib to keep it symmetrical.

10. On the decorated side of your bib lift the base fabric away from the gold fabric you have just sewn on. Carefully cut away the base fabric very close to your machine stitching.

12. With right sides together lay your lining onto your bib. Stitch the straight edge with 1cm seam allowance.
13. Turn bib so that the wrong sides are together. Give it a really good press with the iron. Be careful of the sequins as they can melt! Best to iron from the lining side.
Pin lining and base bib together at neck edge and outside edge.

14. Machine your bias binding around the outside edge. Do the same with the neck edge leaving 15-20cm at the beginning and end of the neck edge. This will be your tie to secure it around the neck. Fold over to encase the cut edges (trim if you need to) and pin.
15. Using slip stitch, hand sew the bias binding down on the lining side. Tie a knot in the neck edge bias strings to secure.
To complete the costume use the fabric and decorations you have left over to make a headband and armbands. Strips which velcro together. Wear over a long thin white dress (or a white sheet worn in a cylinder shape) with a straight black wig and go nuts with the eye make-up.
Let me know how you go. I’d love to see your creations.
A quick upcycle
June 26, 2012
At the beginning of the year I bought this bag for 12 year old to take to school.
It was a little too small from the beginning and was pushed to it’s limits many times.
….. and ….well it broke.
The closures came away and it got a ‘cannot be mended’ hole in the base.
She was very sad because she really loved the illustration…… so I upcycled it into a new bag.
I used the picture as a zippered front pocket with a little pen pocket to the side.
She needs a bag for her extras…. PE clothes, dance clothes, drama costumes….that sort of thing.
I even reused the original bags inside pocket on the new one.
The black bag was already made I bought it at BlankClothing for about $4.
Commission for Winton
June 18, 2012
I haven’t shown you anything I have made in a while.
This neat little tie bag was made using all those ‘novelty’ ties most men who grew up in the 80’s have in their cupboards.
My little friend Winton helped me select the ties to make his ‘go everywhere’ bag. As you can see he chose cyclists, lions, sun and moons, dogs, hot air balloons….. Lots of inspiration for any 8 year old boy.
He told me about his love of photography, so I lined the bag with velvet to protect the lenses and gave it a little extra padding for general protection. Unfortunately the bag was delivered before I realised I only had one good shot!
I’m told he is rarely seen without his bag.
How Pinteresting ……are musically themed homewares?
April 10, 2012

A simple tutorial of a beautifully simple and stylish wok of musical art. Image from Secret Pie Shoppe.
Last ‘How Pinteresting’ Laura said…..
I have been trying to look for interesting ways to decorate with a music theme. We have these dinners with musicians and I thought it might be nice to add something like to the table or on the serving area etc.. Just something a little special and not complicated.
So I pinned a wall full of musical Interiors…. I slipped a few non interior things in there as well if you would like to have a look.
As this is an interactive series, you get to choose the next board I put together.
Just leave a general or specific comment below, and I will find some lovely images to share.
