What’s so good about Good Friday?

April 22, 2011

A question has been floating around our house for the last couple of days.

“Why is Good Friday called good, when it obviously was so bad?”

Well it isn’t to do with the extra long weekend …. which is good, but is because once upon a time ‘good’ meant ‘holy’ or ‘pious’.

Both these words aren’t really common in our day to day vocabulary anymore…. but I’m not sure ‘good’ really captures it.

Is Good Friday being lost in translation?
